During 2007, Burnaby Village Museum’s programs and exhibits highlight
women and their historic role in society. This Speaker Series focuses on
the history of women in BC at both ends of the social spectrum.
*Ladies & Escorts: Gender Segregation in British Columbia Beer Parlours*
Presenter: Robert A. Campbell
Thursday, January 18, 7:00-8:30pm, $5.00
This title is taken from the signs that used to appear over the doors to
hotel beer parlours, one entrance for men only and the other for women
on their own or with male companions. The dominant belief was that women
needed to be both protected and regulated. The official concern was that
the presence of women in beer parlours increased the contacts between
men and female prostitutes and thus facilitated the spread of venereal
disease. Women, particularly those unescorted by men, who entered beer
parlours were often regarded as prostitutes. Public policy was shaped by
these attitudes, and the goal was to separate unescorted women from
unescorted men.
Robert Campbell teaches Canadian history and Canadian-American relations
at Capilano College in North Vancouver. He has written two books on the
historical use and regulation of alcohol. His most recent book is /Sit
Down and Drink Your Beer: Regulating Vancouver’s Beer Parlours/.
