***September 20-22, 2007*

*Red Deer, Alberta*

*//**/MUSEUMS: THE REAL THING!/*

////

/“The objects and information held by museums lie at the heart of all
other activities they undertake.”/ Standard Practices Handbook for
Museums (2005)

Museums provide the real thing; collections and the stories behind them
foster an understanding of identity and a sense of belonging within
communities.

However, museums are challenged with the task of competing with other
attractions and balancing the needs of the public with the essential
functions of a museum: acquiring, conserving, communicating, exhibiting
and researching material evidence. Furthermore, museums are often asked
to demonstrate their relevance to their communities, stakeholders and
funders.

We are seeking 2007 Conference session proposals that examine, challenge
and recognize the uniqueness of museums and museum work: who museums
are, who they serve, what they do, and why they do it.

Session proposals could include relevant and timely topics in the areas of:

· Collections (Collections Management, Conservation, Research)

· Museums and Society

· Administration

· Programming (Programs, Exhibits, Publications)
