MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 10, 2007
Abstract Recyclism
Art works by students from Webster’s Corner Elementary
The Maple Ridge Art Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition
fundraiser of art works by students from Webster’s Corner Elementary.
From July 21 to September 1, students from kindergarten to grade seven
will proudly display works created from mixed media materials ranging
from wood, glass, rock, textiles, metal, ceramic and plastic.
For several months children participated in an after-hours art program,
exploring the elements of art and design and the potential of materials
given to them by local artists, Darcy Mortensen and Cindy Farnsworth.
Every month a new theme was set before the students and with a little
guidance, the children set off to create one-of-a-kind pieces that can
only come from the imagination of little ones.
Each month the students were given a materials theme and other sources
of inspiration as a starting point in their exploration. From there they
took over the creative process by assembling the different recycled
parts donated, and found. All of the pieces have names inspired by
cultural references and popular culture. Some of the assembled works on
display will be a functional claw foot tub settee, a musical collaged
headboard with side tables, as well as a birdhouse garden sculpture.
This project was the brainchild of Darcy Mortensen, a movie prop and set
design artist and PAC member of Webster’s Corner Elementary. Darcy was
interested in developing a fundraising event that would utilize the
talent and creativity of students and bring in much needed funds for the
school. Cindy Farnsworth, a local graphic artist, came on board soon
after the start of the project. Both of these woman tirelessly provided,
guidance, expertise, and direction to an after school fundraising
project that has become the pride of the school.
