New Funding Announced for Museum Summer Jobs

*Ottawa, June 22, 2007 —* Today Canadian Heritage Minister Bev Oda
announced a $5 million increase to the funding available for student
summer jobs in museums through Young Canada Works in Heritage
Organizations (YCW-HO), effective immediately. The new funds are
specifically for small and mid-sized museums; the Canadian Museums
Association (CMA) will administer this additional funding.

“This is an excellent investment and will provide high quality job
experiences for students in communities across the country. Museums
offer great learning opportunities for youth as they acquire knowledge
and experience in preserving their heritage," said CMA executive
director John G. McAvity.

CMA is introducing a new streamlined approval process to release funding
decisions as quickly as possible. We realize that summer is upon us and
that students are available now for the quality jobs which museums
offer. Under the terms of the funding announcement, YCW employer
applicants must meet certain new eligibility criteria, in addition to
the established YCW criteria.

*New criteria: *

    * Applicants must be non-profit museums, galleries, artist-run
centres, science centres, historic houses, zoos, located in Canada
as per the CMA’s definition of museum
      <http://www.museums.ca/en/info_resources/reports_guidelines/museum_definition/>.

    * Applicants must be small to mid-sized museums with annual
operating budgets of less than $1 million.
    * Project proposals must provide quality jobs in museums.
    * The maximum available YCW funding is 75% per project.
    * Applications for positions that continue into the fall are
eligible, provided the project is completed by December 2007.
    * New YCW employer applicants must submit their application via the
YCW website, see further instructions below.
    * CMA membership is NOT required.

*Funding allocation procedure:* CMA has established a procedure to
allocate this new funding; decisions will be made on the following
priority basis:

*1. Projects that were positively reviewed, but not funded by CMA under
YCW-HO 2007. *
CMA received more good applications than could be funded, due to the
level of funding available in the first round of YCW funding. Now there
is a second round, CMA will offer funding to all of these applicants who
meet the above criteria. *CMA will contact these museums VERY shortly;
you do NOT have to contact us.
*If this applies to you — watch your email or fax machine. Note: You are
also eligible to submit additional YCW applications in section 4 below.

2. Projects that were only partially funded by CMA under YCW-HO 2007.
Project proposals from museums that requested more positions, or longer
employment terms than were funded by will be reconsidered. *CMA will
contact these museums VERY shortly; you do NOT have to contact us.
*If this applies to you — watch your email or fax machine. Note: You are
also eligible to submit additional YCW applications in section 4 below.

*3. Projects that were not recommended for funding by CMA under YCW-HO
2007. *
Museums that submitted applications that were not recommended by the
peer jury need to reapply with a new application. Please follow the
procedure in section 4 below.

*4. New YCW applications. *
All organizations that meet the new eligibility criteria may apply to
CMA for YCW support.
You must:

    * Submit your application through the YCW website:
      *www.youngcanadaworks.ca* <http://www.youngcanadaworks.ca>
    * Include NEW JOB in the proposed job title — eg. “NEW JOB —
      Curatorial assistant"
    * Submit by July 9
