Oil on Mylar
Sophie Jodoin’s exhibition, Regiment, focuses on a series of
small-format black and white oils on mylar. Accompanying this is a
digital projection on a continuous loop of the original photographs
which were digitally manipulated in real-time Flash animationn, created
in collaboration with David Jhave Johnston.
Jodoin's oils depict a series of torsos presented from below the eyes to
the waist. This repeated motif of the human torso, both in the oils and
the digital animation provides as the Jodoin explains,” an overall sense
of anonymity yet at the same time a distinctly non-idealized one.
Regiment is intended as a cenotaph to the ordinary.”
The artist’s depiction using a precise mechanical process comparable to
still photography becomes the basis for an examination of collectivity,
individuality, uniformity, fragmentation and redundancy.
Sophie Jodoin, a Visual Arts graduate from Concordia University in
Montreal had her first solo exhibition in 1993 and hasn’t slowed down
since. She has also participated in a number of group shows across
Canada, the United States and Europe.
