Business Strategies in Historic Sites

Heritage organizations, as 'social enterprises,' have the capacity to
develop innovative and sustainable revenue-generating strategies while
also protecting and celebrating the unique heritage values of their
structures, landscapes, collections and mission. This workshop provides
a framework in which you can conceptualize a range of heritage business
opportunities that have the potential to generate essential revenues and
strengthen the services that you provide within your community. You will
develop your ability to:

* Appreciate the fit of heritage organizations within the
'social economy'=20
* Define the ways in which mission and heritage values both
support and constrain business development
* Identify types and key characteristics of social enterprises
* Identify business strategies that build on your organizational
context and heritage resources
* Assess the viability of business strategies in the context of
organizational culture and readiness, available resources, and market
demand
* Approach the preparation of a business plan
* Identify financing and partnership strategies

Facilitator: Irene Gannitsos, manager of Social Enterprise with the
Vancity Community Foundation. Irene will lead case-study investigations,
practical exercises, and will be joined by other resource people from
the museum and heritage sector.
Janine North from Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) will also
be on hand on May 15th to discuss funding opportunities for the Heritage
sector.
