EXTENSION OF AMNESTY PERIOD FOR CERTAIN OWNERS OF
NON-RESTRICTED FIREARMS
On May 16, 2007, the Minister of Public Safety announced a
one-year extension of the amnesty period for owners of
unregistered, NON-RESTRICTED firearms who hold a valid firearms
licence, or who had a licence that expired on or after January 1,
2004. The announcement can be found on the Public Safety web site
at
http://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/media/nr/2007/nr20070516-en.asp. The
new
expiry date of the amnesty period is May 16, 2008.
During the amnesty period, licensed or previously licensed
individuals are protected from criminal liability for unauthorized
possession of an unregistered, non-restricted firearm, provided they
are taking the necessary steps to comply with the law. As set out in
the amnesty order, their options for complying with the law are as
follows: - obtain the required licence and registration certificate; -
deactivate the firearm so that it is no longer a firearm; - export the
firearm in accordance with all applicable legal requirements,
including the legal requirements of the country to which the firearm
is exported; - turn in the firearm to a police officer or a firearms
officer for destruction or other disposal; - sell or give the firearm
to a public service agency, to a business, including a museum, that
holds a licence authorizing the acquisition of firearms or to an
individual who holds a possession and acquisition licence for
firearms; or If they dispose of a firearm that was previously
registered, they need to notify the Registrar. They may do this by
sending an e-mail to cfc-cafc@cfc-cafc.gc.ca or by writing to P.O. Box
1200, Miramichi, NB E1N 5Z3.
For more information on how to comply with the law, refer to the
web site of the RCMP Canada Firearms Centre at www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca
or
call 1 800 731-4000.
