I am happy for all of those organizations that received funding in this
second round of distributions. The criteria used are still suspect, however.
This morning I received a letter from YCW saying that while our
application was viewed favourably (essentially the same application as
for CSJ), there was insufficient funding for our organization.
I spent much of this morning talking with various agencies, including
the constituency office of my MP, Alex Atamanenko. I then learned that
indeed funding was being released for non-profit agencies that received
funding last year. This placed our organization in limbo, since we did
not take the Summer Career Placement funding offered last year due to
our YCW summer student grant. Because we are not considered to have been
funded last year, we are ineligible for this suddenly released funding.
I fear that in many cases, people who had been ineligible for CSJ
funding took the YCW funding if it was offered. With the second wave of
funding offered, these organizations that would now be funded by YCW may
turn down the CSJ funding. Because this second wave is only applicable
to those who received funding last year, our organization would not be
considered.
Discussion with the local Service Canada organization confirmed that we
are not eligible for the funding most recently released.
As with everyone else, the lack of funding stretches our existing
resources, and will force the possible cancellation of projects,
including some much needed facility and exhibit upgrades.
Surely there has to be other criteria in place besides those non for
profit organizations which got funding last year are to receive funding
this year! When a poor decision matrix is followed by another poor
decision making process, it really makes you wonder what we can expect
(or not expect) next…
