The New Web: Interactive and Collaborative Technologies in the Museum
World
=20
New and emerging technologies present challenges and opportunities for
museums and informal educators. Immersive online exhibits can create
compelling visitor experiences, extending the reach and mission of
museums and other cultural institutions, while new collaborative tools
can help provide engaging environments allowing museums, communities,
and the public to work together in meaningful ways.=20
=20
Today, social technologies are now a fundamental part of the online
experience for most Web visitors. Sites such as MySpace, YouTube,
Flickr, Facebook, Second Life, and many others are changing the
landscape of the Web, as are new technologies such as blogs, podcasts,
mashups, and more. Dubbed Web 2.0, visitor-created and organized content
represents a fundamental shift in how visitors interact with the Web and
each other. As museums begin to utilize these new technologies to engage
the public, they are faced with a series of new possibilities and
challenges, both technological and social.
=20
If the mission of museums is to connect with the public at large, then
museums are compelled at the very least to experiment with these new
technologies and to connect with the larger online communities. But how
do museums adapt to environments where the visitor is the main creative
force? How do museums connect, curate, and mediate the visitor
experience? It is a major shift for museums to move beyond their
traditional roles as arbiters of knowledge. How do we redefine the role
of the museum in the Web 2.0 world?
=20
In this course we will explore the social Web first-hand. We will
examine case-studies to see how museums are beginning to respond to the
challenges outlined above, paying particular attention to the emerging
"best practices" in museums' use of blogs, podcasts, mashups, and social
software. In addition, we will explore how museums are beginning to
connect with large-scale social sites like MySpace, Facebook, Flickr,
Wikipedia, Second Life, and YouTube.=20
=20
In a combination of class discussions, short exercises and guest
speakers (via video conferencing), we will explore the technological,
operational, social and design aspects of Web 2.0 development for
museums. In addition, an online assignment and class blog will be part
of the course.=20
=20
Finally, we will discuss how to best evaluate the quality of these
online museum experiences. We will look ahead to the future of the Web
and how museums might take advantage of the next wave of technology to
come.
