MEDIA ADVISORY:
(Vancouver, British Columbia) In celebration of the upcoming BMO Canadian Figure
Skating Championships in January, 2008 the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame
is collaborating with Vancouver artist John Ferrie to create `The Spirit of the
Skate', a tangible connection between sport and art. The collaboration begins on
Tuesday, October 9 as a 7 foot, 250 pound skate sculpture leaves BC Place
Stadium for John Ferrie's studio. Ferrie will create the transformation, using
the skate as his canvas over the next five weeks. On completion, the Skate will
be displayed at the BC Sports Hall of Fame, at sponsor locations throughout the
city, and at the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in January.
The “Painted Skate” is the first step in a two month celebration of skating.
Other aspects of the celebration include a ten week exhibit called “Canada at
Play: BC on Ice”, featuring “Canada At Play” on loan from the Royal
Ontario Museum. This featured exhibit is on display at the BCSHFM from December
1 to January 25, 2008. The skating promotion incorporates educational,
