Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society

Contract Position Opportunity – 6 months with possible extension(s).
This six-month contract will involve hands-on collections management work
in updating and maintaining records, practicing preventive conservation for
the artefact, archival and library collections, and assisting the
development and installation of temporary exhibits at the Gulf of Georgia
Cannery National Historic Site of Canada. This position reports to the
Site Manager, and is the designated liaison to the Collections Committee,
which oversees the operations of the department on behalf of the Board.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Clear the backlog of items for potential accession, and complete the
proper administrative documentation.
· Appraise, accession, and clean (where possible) the large number of
maps, plans, and charts stored in the Archives and currently marked only
with temporary accession numbers. Re-house improperly stored maps, plans,
charts, and posters in the Archives.
· Continue the final culling of Society photographs begun in 2004.
Integrate photographs into the reference collection where appropriate.
· Identify, cull, catalogue, and re-house Society reference materials.
· Complete re-housing of library materials in archival-quality binders as
appropriate.
· Create updated artefact finding aid and location system based on
artefact inventory completed in summer 2006.
· Appraise recently donated items and determine their appropriateness for
accession.
· Train and supervise volunteers for appropriate aspects of collections
work.
· Assist in the development of the 2008 Temporary Exhibit project.
· Facilitate public access to museum, archival and library collections,
and supervise use of these materials.
· Assist the public, Society staff, Parks Canada staff researchers,
Society volunteers and members with research queries related to the Site,
and its various collections.
Qualifications
· University degree in Museum Studies, Collections Management,
Conservation, Archival Studies or related discipline;
· Minimum two years collections management experience, OR equivalent
combination of training and experience;
· Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices currently employed in
the management of museum, archives and library collections;
· Experience in the preparation and mounting of artefacts for temporary
exhibit;
· Knowledge of effective and current preventive conservation principles
and practise as they pertain to artefacts of all media. Particular
experience with wooden and metal artefacts would be beneficial;
· Experience in pest management, proper storage monitoring, artefact
cleaning and safe handling techniques an asset;
· Knowledge of local fishing history and of the cultural needs, interests
and requirements of the local community as related to the collections Gulf
of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site an asset;
· Demonstrated ability to work with databases such as Access and InMagic,
standard word processing programs, and various scanning and digital camera
technology;
· Ability to work as part of a team, with volunteers and committees;
· Effective written and oral communication skills;
· Physical ability to lift material of a reasonable weight and to work in
a cold, damp environment for extended periods of time.
This contract will require a 5-day, 37.5-hour work week. The contract
payment will be commensurate with the experience of the chosen contractor.
The projected term of the contract is 01 December 2007 to 31 May 2008. The
contractor will be required to complete an end-of-term report outlining the
tasks completed and recommendations for the future.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site commemorates the history
of Canada’s West Coast fishing industry in a 113-year old salmon cannery,
situated at the mouth of the Fraser River. The Site is owned by Parks
Canada, and is operated under contract by the not-for-profit Gulf of
