The Art Gallery of the South Okanagan is pleased to present two
important lectures on the internationally renowned Canadian born
artist Agnes Martin in conjunction with the exhibition; Agnes Martin:
On a Clear Day.

1 - 2 pm Saturday October 13th
In search of Agnes Martin - Lecture given by Vernon artist Bryan
Ryley Admission by donation

The well known Okanagan artist and educator Bryan Ryley will be our
guest and to talk about the pilgrimage that he made to meet Agnes
Martin the year following his graduation from Pratt Institute. He had
made the trip to her studio in New Mexico seeking her advice. She
ending up spending a day with Bryan during which she offered three
points of advice that an artist required:

a) a work place, somewhere dedicated to the production of your work
b)
that one has to take care of domestic responsibilities - for example
if you had a family you are to feed, clothe, nurture, and protect them
as is your duty c) and she stated this to be the hardest - is to have
no unnecessary involvements - that is, to not go for that beer or sit
on that committee when you should be engaged in your work.

This tale is much more colourful than stated here and Bryan will
delight the audience with this amazing story and pilgrimage in search
for inspiration and the personal discovery of what the purpose is of
art.
