Curators Amber Ridington (PhD Candidate, Folklore, Memorial =20

University of British Columbia), and Unlimited Digital =20
Communications, Inc., are pleased to announce the completion of the =20
virtual exhibit Dane Wajich- Dane-zaa Stories and Songs: Dreamers and =20=
the Land. The exhibit will soon be officially launched by the Virtual =20=
Museum of Canada. This exhibit was produced by the Doig River First =20
Nation in collaboration with ethnographers, linguists, and multimedia =20=
professionals, and is funded by the Virtual Museum of Canada, the =20
Volkswagen Foundation (Funding initiative: Documentation of =20
endangered languages), the Northeast Native Advancing Society, and =20
North Peace School District #60. It integrates subtitled Dane-zaa and =20=
English video narratives, interpretive e-text, photographs of the =20
production process, recordings of songs, and contemporary and =20
archival images of traditional lands in order to address present =20
concerns faced by the community as they negotiate legacies of =20
colonialism.
Because of your broad interests in museum studies and practices, we =20
are inviting you to preview this virtual exhibit and respond to a =20
brief questionnaire evaluating the project. As a diverse group of =20

The Doig River First Nation, an Aboriginal Dane-zaa group from =20
northeastern B.C., has officially launched their virtual exhibit Dane =20=
Wajich Dane-zaa Stories & Songs: Dreamers and the Land. The exhibit =20
showcases Doig River First Nation oral traditions and teaches about =20
Dane-zaa history and culture through an exciting mix of video and =20
sound files, photographs, and text. This online exhibit was developed =20=
in partnership with the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC) at =20
virtualmuseum.ca, an initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
The exhibit represents the work of many people over several years. In =20=
the summer of 2005, Dane-zaa elders, youth, and community members =20
collaborated with a team of specialists to document and contribute to =20=
the revitalization of Dane-zaa culture and language. Elders brought =20
the documentary team to eight places in their territory where they =20
shared oral histories about the stories, songs, people, and =20
experiences that connect them to the land, and the impact that oil =20
and gas industrialization has had on these places. The stories and =20
songs presented also introduce viewers to a long line of Dane-zaa =20
Dreamers who have provided spiritual and practical guidance for Dane-=20
zaa people for hundreds of years. For Chief Kelvin Davis, =E2=80=9CThis =20=
project, Dane Wajich, is a positive step in helping the public to =20
know and understand that we still carry out our cultural and =20
traditional practices, and assert our Aboriginal and Treaty Rights. =20
We maintain our way of life, and this is one of the values from our =20
culture that we want to share with the world.=E2=80=9D For co-curators =20=
Amber Ridington (PhD Candidate, Folklore, Memorial University of =20
Newfoundland) and Kate Hennessy (PhD Candidate, Anthropology, =20
University of British Columbia), the project exemplifies the =20
potential for new media to facilitate collaborative research and =20
skills training, and to create opportunities for First Nations to =20
communicate their particular histories, cultural traditions, and =20
struggles to protect their environment, animal resources, and way of =20
life.
Other partners in this exhibit include: the North Peace School =20
District #60, who guided the development of the exhibit=E2=80=99s =
Learning =20
Resources for students and teachers; The Volkswagen Foundation, who =20
funded the translation of Dane-zaa Z=C3=A1=C3=A1ge=CC=81=CA=94 (Beaver =
language) =20
narratives into English; and, The Northeast Native Advancing Society =20
(NENAS), who funded the training of Doig River youth in video =20
documentation.
