Join the Fraser Basin Council, the Heritage Branch, Ministry of Tourism,
Sports, and the Arts, and the Cultural Resource Management Program at
the University of Victoria at the Helen Dixon Centre in Quesnel on
October 15th and 16th, 2007 for the following exciting learning
opportunity: 

 

Business Strategies for Heritage Organizations

 

Heritage organizations, as 'social enterprises,' have the capacity to
develop innovative and sustainable revenue-generating strategies while
also protecting and celebrating the unique heritage values of their
structures, landscapes, collections and mission. This workshop provides
a framework in which you can conceptualize a range of heritage business
opportunities that have the potential to generate essential revenues and
strengthen the services that you provide within your community. You will
develop your ability to:

 

*         Appreciate the fit of heritage organizations within the
'social economy' 

*         Define the ways in which mission and heritage values both
support and constrain business development

*         Identify types and key characteristics of social enterprises

*         Identify business strategies that build on your organizational
context and heritage resources

*         Assess the viability of business strategies in the context of
organizational culture and readiness, available resources, and market
demand

*         Approach the preparation of a business plan

*         Identify financing and partnership strategies

 

Facilitators: 

Irene Gannitsos, manager of Social Enterprise with the Vancity Community
Foundation. Irene will lead case-study investigations, practical
exercises, and will be joined by other resource people from the museum
and heritage sector.

 

Thea Vakil is interested in broad management issues such as knowledge
management, organizational effectiveness in the non profit sector, human
resource management, organizational design and managing change. Thea
teaches in the School of Public Administration and for the Cultural
Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria.

 

Janine North from Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) will also
be on hand on October 15th to discuss funding opportunities for the
Heritage sector.

 

Location: Helen Dixon Centre, 241 Kinchant Street, Quesnel, BC 

Date/Times: Monday October 15 and Tuesday October 16th, 9 am - 4 pm
daily

Participant Fee: $30 + GST, fee includes breakfast, lunch, and
refreshment breaks
