The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria
is pleased to offer the following 6-day immersion opportunity for
professionals and volunteers working in museums, heritage sites,
cultural centres and galleries and supporting arts or cultural groups.
This learning opportunity is offered in the beautiful city of
Whitehorse, Yukon.

CULTURAL TOURISM
Just as increasing numbers of travelers are seeking distinctive
heritage, arts, and cultural experiences worldwide, so culture, arts,
and tourism are emerging as key factors in local economies. In this
dynamic environment, the mutual benefits of planned and partnered
approaches to cultural tourism development have become a strategic
imperative.
In this course you will work with participants from both sectors as you
develop your ability to:
*	recognize tourism as a local and global phenomenon=20
*	identify global and local tourism market trends=20
*	relate the rise of cultural tourism to community and regional
development=20
*	evaluate emerging demographic realities in the marketplace=20
*	identify and develop cultural, arts, and heritage resources that
have both local and widespread appeal for tourism=20
*	identify key factors that make cultural tourism products
"exportable"=20
*	balance issues of integrity, authenticity, and preservation with
issues of marketing and public accessibility=20
*	build community support for cultural tourism initiatives=20
*	develop partnerships among tourism, arts, and cultural agencies=20
*	plan, manage, and evaluate cultural tourism initiatives and

*	recognize issues and opportunities that cultural tourism holds

Instructors:=20
Alastair Kerr is an expert in heritage planning and historic resource
evaluation, and is a leading theorist in heritage conservation in
Canada. He holds a BA and an MA in art and architectural history from
the University of Victoria. For the past thirty-three years Alastair has
worked for the British Columbia Heritage Branch where he has had
extensive experience in policy development, strategic planning, historic
resource evaluation, historic site and heritage planning, heritage law,
public consultation and participation programs, downtown revitalization,
dispute resolution, and training. Currently Alastair is the Manager of
Heritage Programs in the Heritage Branch, Ministry of Tourism, Sport,
and the Arts.=20
Ursula Pfahler is a community trainer for Tourism Victoria and a Master
Trainer for Tourism BC. As an adult educator in Canada and
internationally for 20+ years, her work has included developing and
delivering workshops on heritage and aboriginal tourism, facilitating
workshops on sports tourism, and presenting on international marketing
and group travel tourism. Through her business, Poda Communications, she
has served as a consultant with national and international tour
companies developing marketing plans, providing event planning
expertise, and designing and conducting tours. Ursula has also worked
with a cultural heritage organization developing and implementing a
marketing strategy.=20
