CONSERVING HISTORIC STRUCTURES

The conservation of historic places is governed by well-established princip=
les and standards. This intensive course will enhance your understanding of=
the practice of heritage conservation. It addresses the central topics of =
the discipline, focusing on the preparation of a historic structure report.
The course will develop your ability to:
* Understand heritage conservation as a professional activity, guided by=
well-established core principles and standards of practice
* Become familiar with the charters, standards, guidelines, and processe=
s that govern heritage conservation practice
* Become familiar with the statutes, regulations, and codes that control=
heritage conservation in BC and Canada
* Investigate and document the history and heritage values of a historic=
structure
* Investigate and document the physical condition of a historic structur=
e
* Identify the materials and systems commonly encountered in historic st=
ructures, and analyze the nature, extent, and causes of their deterioration
* Select appropriate conservation strategies and interventions for parti=
cular situations
* Prepare a historic structures report, drawing on the information learn=
ed in the course

Instructor: Harold D. Kalman, Ph.D
Harold D. Kalman, Ph.D., is Principal of the Vancouver office of Commonweal=
th Historic Resource Management Limited. He is a specialist in the planning=
and history of heritage and cultural resources. Raised in Montreal, he rec=
eived his education at Princeton University and had additional training in =
conservation at Cornell University and York University (England). He taught=
at the University of British Columbia for seven years before entering priv=
ate practice in 1975. He is Founding President of the British Columbia Asso=
ciation of Heritage Professionals and has served on the boards of the Assoc=
iation for Preservation Technology and the Canadian Association of Heritage=
Professionals. In 2006, he was awarded the British Columbia Heritage award=
.
Kalman is the author (or co-author) of many standard texts on conservation =
and architecture, including A History of Canadian Architecture, Exploring V=
ancouver, Exploring Ottawa, Principles of Heritage Conservation, The Evalua=
tion of Historic Buildings, The Sensible Rehabilitation of Older Houses, En=
core: Recycling Public Buildings for the Arts, and Pioneer Churches.
Kalman is Honorary Professor of Architecture at Hong Kong University and co=
ntinues to lecture and teach worldwide on conservation and cultural heritag=
e issues.
