Hi Liza,

Firstly, I would highly recommend contracting an interpreter
with experience with the media to create one for you.
Ideally one who has the equipment to record on high quality
or can rent time in a recording studio. Also, make sure
there is a good map, brochure or numbered signage to
accompany the audio tour so they have something to guide
them through the locations. Hire the narrator separately if
your consultant's voice isn't clear, animated appropriately
and appealing to listen to.

Otherwise, look for a gnerally experienced and creative
interpreter to do the job for you. Audio Tours are simply a
non-personal form of interpretation. The tour needs to tell a
story with meaning and relate to your audience, even without
having a person be right there. To do that you have to
determine who your primary audience is so you can cater to
their unique needs. That's what interpreters are expert at!
There are several interpreters on this list as well as can
be found at www.interpcan.ca who has a jobs list you can
post an RFP on.

If your budget doesn't permit contracting one out, at the
very least, put your tour together in print and hire an
interpreter to review it and make suggestions to make it
more interpretive before you record it. In some cases,
tweaking where it counts most can make a huge difference in
how it is received.

I have created several outdoor ones for my city. One is a
driving tour that highlights the development, the other is a
walking tour of less than 1 km that looks at the history of
the people, events and places they occurred using Spirits &
Ghosts . People who buy them love them and are surprised
that they are so much more meaningful and they relate to it
more than the "this is this and that is that" type of tour
that is commonly available.

Audio tours allow people to go at their own speed, skip what
they are not interested in and also allow them to repeat
stops. They can control the sound level and who does the
tour with them-privately or share it in a group of their
choice. Some people prefer them over in-person tours, and
will do them when they would never consider doing a guided
tour with an interpreter. Audio Tours are cheaper in the
long run to produce than hiring a staff member for each tour
and can be edited if exhibits change seasonally etc.

Good luck!

Subject: [Bcma-l] Guided Tours with Headsets

We are thinking of introducing 'Guided Tours' with the use
of Headsets, for our visitors to the Historic Roadhouse. We
would be grateful for the opportunity to contact anyone who
is currently using this method of touring.
