The question of security in museums is a timely one.
Touring museums in Europe, I notice there is generally an elderly female on
guard to watch over possible abuse of artefact's.
If you know the language they are also usually a fund of knowledge, since
they have been there for decades.
I have also seen armed militia and guards with Tommy guns on duty in some
cases.
We do not have such guards, quite the opposite.
Our craft center is unattended, and when people wish to purchase an item,
they simply bring it to the guide on duty and they pay there.
We have never had any thefts, some of our guests are amazed at this system
and some comment that it indicates the kind of museum we are, there is a
kind that watches and keeps everything locked up and there is a kind that
trusts their visitors.
We had some minor damage caused by a school group which was supposedly being
monitored by supervisors, theirs, but we have not had vandalism to our
exhibits, some of which are valued at over $10,000.
We do not take credit cards except in the Bistro, but we accept all checks
and have never had a bad one.
