Background:
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is located in the
fishing village of Steveston in Richmond, BC. The Cannery opened in 1894
and operated until 1979. The site was designated by Parks Canada to
commemorate the fishing industry of Canada's West Coast and opened to
the public in 1994. Operated under contract for Parks Canada by the
not-for-profit Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, the Cannery collections
include over 10,000 artefacts, archival documents, and a small research
library.
Scope of Work:
Three core curatorial projects have been identified for 2008:
1) 2008 Rehousing Project, including handling, cleaning,
inventorying, accessioning and rehousing artefacts, archival documents,
plans, photographs and charts;
2) preventative conservation of collections, including
environmental monitoring, condition reporting, cleaning objects;
3) helping establish nomenclature standards for artefact
cataloguing
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Windows, Microsoft Office, and knowledge of databases
(InMagic) and spreadsheets (Excel)
- familiar with principles and practice in museum and / or
archival work
- education or experience handling artefacts and / or
archival records
- able to lift up to 20 lbs
Qualifications:
- 3^rd or 4^th year undergraduate or graduate student in
Museum Studies, Archival Studies, Archaeology, Anthropology or History
- Must be a full-time post-secondary student returning to
full-time studies in Fall 2008
