Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden Society invites applications for the following
summer term position:

Programs/Events Assistant

Through the Canadian Museums Association's Young Canada Works Program we are
seeking to fill the position for a Program/Events Assistant.

Working under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, the
Programs/Events Assistant will assist in the development, implementation,
promotion and evaluation of new and existing educational and public programs
to help create cross-cultural understanding between Chinese and non-Chinese
audiences. The work includes the delivery of special events such as the
Enchanted Evenings concert series, summer day camp programs for kids,
Mid-Autumn Moon Festival and the installation of visual art displays. The
Programs/Events Assistant will be responsible for implementing a variety of
educational programs to groups of all ages, interpretative tours to the
general public, assisting with the Garden's annual Gala fundraising event in
June, attending committee meetings & minute taking, and booking/scheduling
tours.  Some operations and administrative tasks, as needed.

Qualifications: Students in 3rd or 4th year in an Arts program with course
work in Asian Studies, Anthropology, History, and/or Museum studies. Some
knowledge of Chinese culture & history is a definite asset. The applicant
will preferably have interpretive experience in museums and must have
experience working in educational settings with children, the public, ESL
students and community groups; strong oral and written communication skills
in English; good interpersonal skills and working in a team environment.  A
second language (Chinese) may be an asset but not mandatory.

***Candidates must be eligible under Young Canada Works in Heritage
Institutions and registered with the Workopolis databank. 

Position starting May 19 to September 5, 2008 for 35 hours/week. Schedule
includes some evening and weekend work for special events, programs,
training and tours.  Position hours are dependant on receiving successful
funding from the Young Canada Works in Heritage Institutions program.  Also,
possibility of extension of contract (part-time) depending on the
performance of the candidate and the success of programs.
