The Kelowna Museums proudly present
*the 2^nd Annual Okanagan Historica Regional Heritage Fair!*
at the Historic Laurel Packinghouse
May 17^th , 2008
11:00AM to 3:00PM
The Historica Fair returns to the Okanagan this May during the Kelowna
Museums' 2^nd Annual Okanagan Historica Regional Heritage Fair. An
educational initiative of the Historica Foundation, the Historica Fair
is an exhibition of student work on a Canadian theme. Students prepare
projects to tell stories and share information on Canadian people,
places, and events. The students' projects will be on public exhibition
at the historic Laurel Packinghouse, 1304 Ellis Street, on Saturday, May
17^th from 11:00am -- 3:00pm. Come view the student projects during this
one-day exhibition!
The student projects are very diverse and range from biographies of
Canadian pop stars (Avril Lavigne, Nelly Furtado), to sports,
entertainment, and culture (Sidney Crosby, Karen Kain, Jim Carrey), and
even to famous historical figures such as Louis Riel, John A. Macdonald,
and Alexander Graham Bell, to name but a few! Students will present
their projects in various styles, including live dramatizations and a
giant wooden puzzle of Canada entitled "Our Journey... Our Canada".
There will be live entertainment, provided by the Westside Ramblers who
are known for their musical interpretations of Canadian history, and a
First Nation performance as well as hands-on "pioneer" activities
including butter-churning and knitting demonstrations. You are invited
to make your way down to the Laurel Packinghouse for a day of hands-on
learning and fun! For more information please call (250) 868-4836.
"This is our second Historica Fair, building on a pilot Fair we held
last year," says Patti Kilback, Curator of Education for the Kelowna
Museums, "and it's going to be bigger and better this year with lots of
community involvement. We have approximately 65-70 students
participating from several different schools across the Okanagan".
Participating schools include Raymer Elementary, AS Matheson, Glenrosa
Middle School, Kelowna Secondary School, as well as homeschool students
and students from the Vernon area.
Judging for the Historica Fair will take place on Friday, May 16^th by a
panel of community judges that includes Dr. Vicki Green from UBC-O, Hugh
Gloster, Bob Hayes, Jan Johnson, Karen Autio, Lorainne McLarty, Sharron
Simpson, Marie Tonn, James Coble, Morgan Marrs, and a representative
from the RCMP. The judges will select one student to represent British
Columbia and attend the National Fair in Victoria in July. In addition,
six students will be sent on to the first BC Provincial Fair in Kamloops
in late May.
The Kelowna Museums gratefully acknowledge the Historica Fair sponsors,
including the Historica Foundation and the Kelowna Rotary Club.
