JOB POSTING: Research Registrar

 
Simon Fraser University Gallery, Burnaby, BC
Full-time from June 23 to August 29, 2008
 
Position outline: 
Carry out an inventory of approximately 1,300 works hanging in public and
semi-public spaces within the University, on three separate campuses. This
will include devising a more accurate and specific system of tracking
locations, writing condition reports, and entering all updates into the
collection management database. The second half of the project involves the
cataloguing of an outstanding donation of artworks. The student will work
closely with the SFU Gallery Director to first assess which of the c. 2,300
works will be brought into the collection. The student will then properly
accession the selected works, creating all necessary paper work for the
object files and new records in the collection database. The student will
acquire key skills relating to basic museum functions, especially with
regards to collections management. This includes training in and becoming
proficient at handling and storing works of art, assessing their condition,
as well as managing records for artwork through a collection management
database and registration processes.
 
Qualifications: 
* Must be between the ages of 16 and 30 and either returning to school in
September 2008 or a recent graduate (within the last 12 months); must be a
Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
* Completion of minimum 2 years post-secondary education in either studio
art, art history, or related discipline; some courses in museum collection
management, or equivalent experience, preferred.
* Excellent computer and database management skills; experience with
software such as FileMaker Pro and Excel preferred.
* Organizational skills and attention to detail: ability to maintain
detailed records, file information.
* Experience handling works of art.
* Excellent research skills: on-site (archival), and web-based.
* Strong oral and written communication skills: ability to interact with
people, conduct queries, speak about art.

Term of employment: June 23, 2008 to Friday, August 29, 2008
Wage: $17/hr + 4% in vacation pay
Work week: the work week is Tuesday to Saturday until August 1, and Monday
to Friday from August 5 onwards.
