Virtual Museum of Canada Project

The North Vancouver Museum & Archives (NVMA), the community museum & archiv=
es of both the City and the District of North Vancouver, has been awarded a=
 contract by the Canadian Heritage Information Network to develop a multi-f=
aceted web tour celebrating the history of mountaineering in British Columb=
ia.

Climbing to the Clouds: A Century of Mountaineering in British Columbia wil=
l be viewed on the Virtual Museum of Canada website and will feature the st=
ories of the early and modern mountain adventurers who have trail-blazed, e=
xplored, mapped, hiked and climbed our mountain terrain. Special emphasis w=
ill be placed on photography as most mountaineers used cameras to record th=
eir climbs.  A virtual photo album, video clips, Google maps, as well as di=
gital storytelling will be employed to tell the tale.  At http://www.dnv.or=
g/nvma/virtualmuseum/ examples of the images and artifacts that will be use=
d may be viewed.

The Research Contractor will work with the Project Coordinator (the Museum =
& Archives' Assistant Director), web developer, writer, a digital storytell=
ing agency as well as representatives from the mountaineering community. S/=
he will also draw on the advice of community mountaineers who have practica=
l expertise related to the subject.  Building upon the research and resourc=
es assembled for a recent temporary exhibit, the Researcher will advise on =
topics, and will source and select those artifacts, photographs, oral histo=
ry interviewees that will illustrate those topics.  The Researcher will com=
pile a report of findings including draft writings of text and captions rel=
ated to the web tour.

The successful Contractor should be familiar with the principles and practi=
ce of exhibit research, development and interpretation.  S/he will have a p=
roven track record of focusing research data to achieve project deliverable=
s and of working effectively with other organizations and their representat=
ives.  Applicants must have relevant education background in history, oral =
history, material history or the equivalent experience and training.  Super=
ior written, organizational abilities, energy and collaborative team skills=
 are required.  The contractor must be legally entitled to work in Canada. =
Contract duration: September 2008 to mid 2009.  The value of this completed=
 contract is a maximum of $12,000.
