Mr. Larry A. Ewashen
Curator
The Doukhobor Discovery Centre
112 Heritage Way
Castlegar, British Columbia
V1N 4M5
Dear Mr. Ewashen:
I am pleased to advise you that I recently designated Peter Vasilevich
Verigin as a person of national historic significance and the Migration
of the Doukhobors to British Columbia as a national historic event.
When it met in July 2007, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of
Canada considered the national historic significance of Peter Vasilevich
Verigin and the Migration of the Doukhobors to British Columbia and
recommended their designation. The excerpts from the minutes of that
meeting are enclosed for reference.
Preparations for a plaque unveiling ceremony entail consultation with
you and other interested parties regarding the plaque text and other
related matters. This process usually takes at least 18 months. Mr.
Steve Langdon, Field Unit Superintendent, Coastal British Columbia, or
his designate will advise you as plans for the event are developed. For
further details, I invite you to contact Mr. Langdon by telephone at
250-654-4048, by fax at 250-654-4014 or by e-mail at steve. langdon@pc.
gc.ca.
In view of their interest in these matters, I have forwarded a copy of
this letter to the British Columbia Minister of Tourism, Sport and the
Arts, the Member of Parliament for British Columbia Southern Interior,
and the Senator for British Columbia.
Sincerely,
John Baird, P.C., M.P.
