2008-02-16 Nicola Valley Museum VP winner of 2008 BC Heritage Award
For Immediate Release...
The Nicola Valley Museum Archives Association has just learned that
Association Vice-president Murphy Shewchuk is the winner of the 2008
British Columbia Heritage Award.
The British Columbia Heritage Award is conferred annually by the
Minister responsible for heritage in the province of British Columbia.
The award recognizes an individual whose long term leadership and
contributions to the conservation and presentation of British Columbia's
heritage have been exemplary.
The Award consists of a mounted plaque and a ministry gift of $10,000 to
a non-profit heritage-related organization or project, designated by the
award recipient. The recipient is announced in February during Heritage
Week, and the award is presented by the Minister (or representative) at
the Heritage Society's of B.C.'s annual award ceremony, usually the
first week of June.
Heritage Branch Director Patrick Frey made the announcement to the
heritage community at a public lecture at SFU Harbour Centre in
Vancouver on February 14, 2008. Mr. Frey indicated that the award would
be presented at the Heritage BC Conference in Langley on June 6th, 2008.
"I was completely surprised when Patrick Frey contacted me," said Murphy
Shewchuk. "I know I have been involved with various aspects of BC
Heritage since the early 1970s when I served on the board of the
Kamloops Museum, but I didn't know that anyone had nominated me for the
award."
Previous award winners have mainly come from the Lower Mainland and
Vancouver Island. They include:
2004 - Sue Morhun, Langley - The Land Conservancy of BC
2005 - Mary Elizabeth Bayer, Victoria - The Victoria Foundation
2006 - Harold Kalman, Vancouver - University of Victoria, Cultural
Resource Management Program
2007 - Samuel & Nicholas Bawlf, Salt Spring Island and Victoria - Sir
Francis Drake Historical Society
"I look forward to receiving the award certificate," said Murphy
Shewchuk. "It will be welcome recognition for the work that we do in
the BC Interior. The $10,000 award will also be a welcome addition to
the Nicola Valley Museum's rebuilding fund. It will allow us to
continue the modernizing work we started three years ago.
In addition to his work with the museum, Murphy is the Author of several
hundred magazine articles and a dozen books, most with a heritage
component. He has also served as President of Trails, BC, the group
responsible for The Trans Canada Trail in British Columbia.
