Welcoming T=A1=AFxwelatse

March 1 to mid-May, 2008

Public welcoming ceremony March 1, 2:00 pm

T=A1=AFxwelatse, an ancestor of the Ts=A1=AFelxw=A8=A6yeqw people, was =
born in the
distant past when things were not quite right. He was turned to granite =
many
years ago as punishment for mistreating his wife, who was charged =
thereafter
with his care. For generations, the women of the family looked after =
their
stone ancestor, who carried within him lessons about how to live and act
properly. In 1892, Stone T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse was taken from his =
homeland and
eventually acquired as an object of study by the Burke Museum of Natural =
and
Cultural History in Seattle. In October 2006, after 114 years of =
separation
from his extended family, Stone T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse was repatriated and =
journeyed
home again. According to his namesake, Herb Joe, a former Chief of the
Tzeachten First Nation, "he will continue to do the job he set out to do =
=A8C
to teach." Thanks to Herb Joe and his family, and the St=A8=AE:l=A8=AD =
Research and
Resource Management Centre, T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse will reside at MOA from =
March 1
through mid-May, where he will form the basis of a high school program =
on
repatriation, and continue to share his message that =A1=B0we need to =
learn to
live together in a good way.=A1=B1

On Saturday, March 1 at 2:00 pm, the Museum of Anthropology, the =
T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2
tse Family, and the St=A8=AE:l=A8=AD Research and Resource Management =
Centre invite
you to welcome T=A1=AFxwelatse to MOA. Distinguished speakers include =
His
Honour, The Honourable Steven Point, Lieutenant Governor of British
Columbia, T=A1=AFxwel=A8=A2tse (Herb Joe), Tzeachten First Nation and =
Albert (Sonny)
McHalsie, Co-Director, St=A8=AE:l=A8=AD Research & Resource Management =

Treasures of the Tsimshian from the Dundas Collection

Exhibition on display through June 7, 2008=20

>From February to June 2008, MOA is hosting Treasures of the Tsimshian =
from
the Dundas Collection, a major exhibition of 48 artifacts collected by =
the
Rev. Robert J. Dundas at Metlakatla, BC, in 1863. MOA is the last stop =
on
the exhibition=A1=AFs cross-country tour, which began in April 2006 in =
Tsimshian
territory, where these important cultural pieces originated, and where =
they
had not been seen for more than a century. Following their display at =
MOA in
2008, the objects will be returned to their present owners, who =
purchased
them at auction in October 2006.=20

Developed by the Royal B.C. Museum and the chiefs and elders of the =
Allied
Tsimshian Tribes of Lax Kw=A1=AFAlaams and Metlakatla, and co-presented =
at MOA
by the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, this exhibit presents a unique
opportunity for local and international visitors to learn about and
appreciate the rich artistic and cultural traditions of the Tsimshian
people.=20

A range of public programs accompanies the show, beginning with an =
opening
reception on February 3, 2008. See below for details. Thanks to =
exhibition
sponsors Westerkirk Capital and BC Ferries, and media sponsors The =
Georgia
Straight and CBC Radio One.=20

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas =A8C Meddling in the Museum

Held over to April 28, 2008

Haida artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas mixes it up at MOA with three
installations responding to the Museum and the need for engagement among
peoples. Michael=A1=AFs works incorporate media as diverse as a
stolen-but-recovered car hoods and copper leaf (Coppers from the Hood), =
an
entire canoe-bearing Pontiac Firefly (Pedal to the Meddle), and an
interactive Haida manga mural using abandoned archaeology storage trays
(Bone Box). Installations curated by Karen Duffek, Curator, Contemporary
Visual Arts. Thanks to Canada Council for the Arts for their support of =
this
project.=20
