Herb Rice Carves Welcome Figure for Hecate Park*
*
Area D Director, Mike Tansley and the Cowichan Valley Regional District
(CVRD) have commissioned Herb Rice to carve a welcome figure for Hecate
Park. The welcome figure will be completed and in place for May 3rd. *
* This date was chosen to coincide with the Spirit of Cowichan Days May
2-4^th as we celebrate British Columbia’s 150^th birthday.*
* The Welcome Figure is a traditional Coast Salish Man with arms forward
in a welcoming gesture. **You can watch Herb carving this figure
starting March 1st at the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre.*
*Herb Rice is a First Nation Artist of Coast Salish descent from the
Cowichan Valley. He is a wood carver whose approach to his work is to
combine the richness of his heritage with a more contemporary
perception. Herb's art is rendered on wood in forms of Wall Panels,
Doors, Totems, Talking Sticks and Figurines, all of which reflect
legends, teachings or personal stories of growth. His totems and his
animal depictions are carved in local red and yellow cedar, alder or
pine and depict traditional Salish and Kwakuitl designs. *
* The concepts and designs Herb depicts represent values, experiences,
philosophies and aspirations of First Nations and non-native
individuals, families and organizations. Each Art piece is accompanied
with a story relating the journey represented. *
*Herb will be carving the Welcome Figure at the *
