Doukhobor Discovery Centre Heritage Project

Sunday, February 24th the Doukhobor Discovery Centre unveiled its Heritage
Week Project at the USCC Cultural Centre in Grand Forks.

After months of recording three different psalmist groups, including
rehearsals of all groups together, a public presentation took place for an
enthusiastic audience.

Several psalms were performed and once again, all was recorded with audio
and video.

Future plans include a CD collection featuring the Grand Forks Psalmists,
Psalmists from Krestova and the Slocan Valley Psalmists.

These psalms are a traditional body of work passed down through oral culture
dating back hundreds of years and the Discovery Centre felt it imperative to
make such a preservation recording as this type of choral ensemble singing
is diminishing.

Future plans include a video production of the entire project including
interviews with the participants as well as experts on the subject
explaining the historical significance of this activity as well as scenes of
the rehearsal process.

This was a historically important project and the Doukhobor Discovery Centre
is grateful for the participation of the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation
which first supported the project and the sponsorship of the Columbia
Kootenay Cultural Alliance which provided additional funding support under
their heritage funding initiative.
