An examination of the physical characteristics of various types of museum c=
ollections, the ways they are affected by a range of environmental factors,=
and the preventive conservation and treatment policies and procedures that=
are utilized to ensure the safe-keeping of artifacts and specimens in stor=
age, on exhibit, in transit, and when in use for research and programming p=
urposes. Explore the principles and techniques of preventive care and stren=
gthen your understanding of:
* the ethics of conservation and the basic tenets that govern the conser=
vation profession
* what conservation is and of a conservator's role within an institution=
or with collections
* collections care and the need for partnership
* the history of conservation and the evolution of taking a preventive r=
ather than an interventive approach to collections care
* the need to become familiar with the various conservation resources an=
d resource institutions available
* the terminology used by conservators and conservation scientists
* the agents of deterioration that can affect museum collections
* the techniques used to measure and quantify the agents of deterioratio=

* the risks affecting the collections in your care and to develop mitiga=
tive strategies for dealing with these risks
* active and passive approaches to controlling the museum environment

Instructor
Susan L Maltby is a conservation consultant specializing in artifact treatm=
ent, training seminars, collection surveys, advice on collections care and =
management, and conservation guidelines for exhibits, museums and heritage =
structures. She earned a Master of Art Conservation specializing in artifac=
t conservation from Queens University in 1984, has extensive field experien=
ce in Cyprus and Jordan as an archaeological conservator, and has written n=
umerous articles and papers, and contributed to the academic literature on =
conservation technique. Previously, Susan worked as a Conservator with the =
Canadian Conservation Institute, a Fellow at the National Museum of Natural=
History, Smithsonian Institution, and as an intern at the Klondike Nationa=
l Historic Site.
