Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art Studio 111 presents artist 
Shauna Oddleifson*

KELOWNA (BC) – Kelowna based artist Shauna Oddleifson has been invited 
to participate as artist-in-residence this January at the Alternator 
Gallery for Contemporary Art.

Oddleifson works in intaglio prints and reductive oil stick drawings to 
depict stories of childhood - a complex time of life when innocence and 
corruption conflict in often frightening ways.

Oddleifson says about her work, “Innocence and virtue are 
characteristics people usually apply to children, yet what can be 
witnessed in playgrounds in the absence of adults can be incredibly 
disconcerting. I have become fascinated with these cruel and strange 
things that often transpire between kids.”

At fist glance the drawings appear humourous, yet upon close inspection 
contain mortifying endings. A smiling young girl can be seen pushing her 
friend off the wrong side of a slide, burying another in a sandbox or 
opening a jar of bees to sting other children.

The Alternator invites the public to visit Oddleifson in Studio 111 and 
to view her new work this February, which will be displayed in the 
Alternator Window Gallery, a glass enclosed exhibition space in the 
public area of the Rotary Centre for the Arts.

The Alternator Gallery offers member artists the opportunity to 
participate in a one-month residency in Studio 111 in the Rotary Centre 
for the Arts, the facility that houses the Alternator Gallery in 
Kelowna's downtown cultural district located at 421 Cawston Avenue.
