The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, which operates the Gulf of Georgia
Cannery National Historic Site under contract to Parks Canada, is seeking a
Head Interpreter to manage seasonal interpretive staff, to deliver school
and interpretive programs and to assist with the development and delivery
of public programs and special events.

The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for the delivery and
maintenance of interpretive programs. This will include assisting with
hiring and training seasonal staff, supervising program delivery and
interpretive staff schedules and booking and delivering school and
interpretive programs.

The Head Interpreter reports to the Public Programs Manager and assists the
Public Programs Manager with the development and delivery of special
events. In addition there will be some responsibility for monitoring site
safety and for interaction with the Cannery’s visitors including responding
informally to inquiries and complaints.

This position requires excellent communication skills, supervisory
experience, experience working with the public and in a team environment.
History, tourism, museums, theatre and/or fisheries background an asset, as
well as bilingualism (French/English) and/or fluency in other languages.
This position may share front desk duties of cash handling. This is a
full-time, full-season position (May to November) with some availability
required in the shoulder season (March-April) and the potential for
extended employment.

Must be willing to work weekends and holidays. Hire is conditional upon

HEAD INTERPRETER Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site
Nature and scope of position
·     Historical and exhibit interpretation and program delivery in a
complex site
·     Supervision of interpretive and front desk staff
·     Input in the development of new events and interpretive programs
·     The Head Interpreter reports to the Public Programs Manager  (APPM@),
and in conjunction with the PPM, is the communications link between
administrative staff and seasonal staff.
·     This is a full-time, full-season position, with some requirement for
availability in the shoulder season and the potential for extended
employment

Duties
Ø     Under the supervision of, and in absence of the PPM, supervises
interpreters and front desk attendants in the following areas:
   Daily site procedures:
§     Responsible for correct opening and closing procedures
§     Assists with front desk procedures including cashing in and out
§     Inputs daily statistics
§     Handles visitor comments, complaints and site enquiries
       School programs
§     Ensures correct booking procedures
§     Is able to present and supervise all school programs
§     Ensures set-up and take-down of school program materials
§     Monitors quantity and condition of program props and resource
materials

Ø     Seasonal staff record keeping
§     Prepares the seasonal staff and interpreters weekly and daily
schedules
§     Monitors work sheet and banked time records
§     Prepares interpretive and seasonal staff payroll sheets

Ø     Reports to the PPM on a weekly basis to review the following areas
§     Interpreters performance
§     Visitor feedback
§     Public programs and tour bookings
§     Staff participation in special events and programs
§     Additional concerns

Ø     Participates as a member of the administrative staff
§     Assists with hiring seasonal interpretive staff
§     Assists with mid season, interpretive staff review
§     Attends Administrative staff meetings when possible
§     Assists with planning and evaluation of site programs, activities and
special events where appropriate
§     Writes an end-of-season report
§     Performs other duties as required

Ø     Site operations, security and safety
§     Operates the AV equipment and reports major problems to the PPM and
Maintenance staff
§     Ensures the site is free of hazards and reports concerns to the PPM
and Maintenance staff
§     Provides basic first aid as required: takes first aid training as
needed
§     Is familiar with emergency procedures and ensures their action if
needed
§     Understands the security system
§     Ensures general safety of artefacts and reports any problems to the
PPM or Collections Manager
§         Supervises and performs minor maintenance if needed e.g. cleaning
display cases, collecting litter
