Burning Cold Travelling Exhibition
Dates: January 11 - February 16, 2008
Opening Reception: Friday, January 11, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

The Nanaimo Art Gallery is very pleased to present Burning Cold as its first
exhibition in 2008. The Yukon Arts Centre Art Gallery created this special
art exhibition for the 2007 Canada Winter Games, using that event as an
opportunity to promote and exchange between cultures through the arts. The
exhibition is now travelling throughout Canada, with Nanaimo being its first
and only scheduled stop in British Columbia, on its way to the Oakville Art
Gallery and the Art Gallery of Windsor in Ontario.

The Burning Cold exhibition was organized by a panel of curators from across
the country, and showcases some of Canada's finest young and emerging
artistic talents - from both the north and south. It introduces and
considers questions and concepts crucial to understanding Canada's national
identity and history from a distinctively northern perspective. These
exceptional works include both traditional and contemporary media, ranging
from lithographic prints, to cutting-edge sculpture, to multi-media. The
exhibition explores the unique cultural and social experiences of First
Nations people living in northern Canada as juxtaposed with the shared
realities of the Canadian south. It explores and promotes the diversity of
cultures, and opens a discourse between visual artists and the general
public.

Burning Cold will be on display in both the upper and lower levels of the
Nanaimo Art Gallery located on the Malaspina University-College campus from
January 11th to February 16th. An opening night reception will take place
Friday, January 11th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Visitors will be able to
witness the incredible array of experiences depicted by participating
artists. This exhibition will enrich the Nanaimo community, and engage
everyone in a dialogue on the similarities we all share and the differences
that mould our experiences as Canadians.

Educational tours will be available.

An admission fee will be charged for this national, travelling exhibition as
costs to present it are considerably higher than local exhibitions.
