The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A Retrospective Exhibition
<http://www.kag.bc.ca/exhibitions/current.htm> comprises 58 works,
including examples of Odjig's history paintings, murals, legend
paintings, erotica, abstractions and landscapes. As a group, these works
articulate the breadth of Odjig's engagement with her personal and
cultural history. They also trace the remarkable aesthetic development
of the artist from her initial experimentation to the mature mastery of
her media.

*Brian Rouble*
*/Awakenings/*
*May 24 to July 13, 2008*
*Gallery Under Glass*
* *
Awakenings brings together science and spirituality through Brian
Rouble's exploration of global consciousness. He has traveled the globe,
making multiple trips to Africa. His sculptures are influenced by
indigenous African art and culture and his scientific background in
genetics and quantum physics. His imagery is based on human forms--most
notably faces--emerging and contorting out of different varieties of
soapstone.
* *
*Terry Kirkpatrick*
*/Brushes on Wheels/*
*June 8 to July 20, 2008*
*The Cube*
Since becoming partially disabled in 1991, Terry Kirkpatrick has
completed accounting and computer courses at Thompson Rivers University
and received an Art Diploma from Stratford Career Institute in 2002. He
creates works in pencil crayon, pastel, watercolour, acrylic, and oil
paint. Kirkpatrick's images are drawn from First Peoples iconography,
his friends and personal experiences.
* *
*Christine Beaton*
*July 19 to September 7, 2008*
*Gallery Under Glass*
Christine Beaton is a ceramic artist and graphic designer, and has
worked in computer aided drafting and architectural modeling. When she
was young she disassembled her dad's watches and her mom's jewellery. As
a consequence, her parents gave her the book /How Things Work/ and
promptly moved their finer things out of reach. Her works are an
exploration of the materiality of clay and of the inner workings of
objects. The forms reflect her interest in science and nature and
exhibit great patience and an eye for detail.
* *
*Curator's Choice*
*July 26 to September 7, 2008*
*/The Cube/***
This summer marks the fourth annual exhibition in The Cube of work by
students graduating from Thompson Rivers University. Selected by
Kamloops Art Gallery Assistant Curator Craig Willms, Curator's Choice
highlights some of the talent from TRU's Bachelor of Fine Arts 2008
graduating class. Students at TRU graduate with a wide variety of
specialties, including ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, painting,
photography, and installation. Like previous Curator's Choice
exhibitions, this one is not so much a "best of" show, but one that is
united by thematic and aesthetic threads running through the work of
these emerging artists.
*Calendar of Events*
* *
*Film Screenings*
*Thursdays, 7:00 pm*
*July 10, August 14*
/The Life and Work of Daphne Odjig/ is a 48-minute documentary film
produced by First Voice Multimedia in Winnipeg. The film traces Odjig's
life, often referencing specific works she has produced over the years
to tell her story.
* *
*Sunday Guided Tours*
*1:00 pm*
*July 6, July 20, August 10, August 24*
Join Secwepemc artist and educator David Tremblay for guided tours of
the exhibition The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A
Retrospective Exhibition <http://www.kag.bc.ca/exhibitions/current.htm>.
Tremblay is intimately familiar with Odjig's life story and art
practice, having guided many popular tours of the exhibition /Daphne
Odjig: Four Decades of Prints/ in 2005. A natural teacher, Tremblay
brings great detail and humour to his exhibition tours.

boxes, animal kites, and more.
* *
*Paper Art*
/July 14 to July 18/
Dress to get messy! Paper-making is a great way to recycle paper scraps
into art. Participants use large paper scraps from wrapping paper,
scrapbook paper, or even magazines to create a variety of works of art.
*Fun with Wallpaper*
/July 21 to July 25/
Participants use motor skills for simple drawing and painting techniques
to explore art and texture. They create wild mobiles, patterned shoes,
crazy cartoons, and folk art memory-wear, all made from wallpaper.
*Dipping and Dying*

An exciting art activity that involves dipping and dying a variety of
fabrics. Once participants are finished dipping and dying the material,

Gallery during July and August.
* *
*Cubism and More*
/July 7 to July 11/
Geometric forms, such as circles, squares and oblongs, are very common
art elements. Learn how to create simple designs. Using graph paper,
pencil and ruler create patterns that express feelings, or tell a story.
The patterns are then coloured and used to decorate boxes, drums,
clothing and bags.
*Painting your Story*

Learn to explore personal stories through discussion. Then create
paintings and collages on various materials, such as canvas, wood,
paper, cans and more. Finished works of art vary in size, shape and style.

basic drawing and painting techniques and colour mixing. In group
discussions, participants share stories about their personal heroes and
have fun painting a mural to honour them.
*Masks*
/July 28 to August 1/
Participants experience a guided tour of the current exhibition. During

Selected by
Kamloops Art Gallery Assistant Curator Craig Willms, Curator's Choice
highlights
some of the talent from TRU's Bachelor of Fine Arts 2008 graduating

Students at TRU graduate with a wide variety of specialties, including
ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, painting, photography, and
installation. Like
previous Curator's Choice exhibitions, this one is not so much a "best
of" show, but one that is united by thematic and aesthetic threads
running
through the work of these emerging artists.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
