*North Delta's Rich History on Tour*
* *
*/Delta, BC/** *-- Saturday, July 19, 2008, the Delta Museum and
Archives will be taking Delta's rich history on a road trip with a
historical bus tour of North Delta. Conducted by renowned heritage
expert Don Luxton, the tour will include an overview of the area's rich
history, its archaeological sites, heritage buildings and other
significant points of interest.
The net sheds, school houses and beautiful heritage homes that dot North
Delta's landscape are picturesque reminders of the area's vibrant and
charming past. The area's rich and diverse history will be revealed
through visits to some of the area's pre-historic sites and heritage
buildings that will be encountered en route.
The journey will begin with a drive along River Road to Gunderson Slough
where the group will hear about the important fishing communities that
once thrived there and about the local, national and international
significance of the Glenrose and St. Mungo archaeological sites that
were uncovered in the 70s.
Participants will be treated to a rare glimpse of the 1920s scow house
at Gunderson Slough and will also tour a modest 1905 fishing house, the
Gregory Residence, one of the last surviving riverfront homes in the
Sunbury area along River Road.
After taking time to enjoy a lunch brought from home on the grounds of
Trinity Lutheran Church, participants will learn more about the history
of Annieville and Sunbury from Kathy Bossort, Archivist for the Delta
Museum and Archives and see the museum's latest exhibit /"A River of
Memories: the story of Annieville, Sunbury and River Road"./ At this
stop, participants will also have an opportunity to tour the exterior
and interior of the landmark church that was the symbolic heart of the
early Norwegian fishing community.
Luxton, author of /Delta's Rural and Urban Heritage Inventories/, will
conclude the tour with a 1 1/2 block walking tour past some of Delta's
beautiful residential heritage homes along River Road pointing out the
various architectural styles of that era.
/Tickets are selling fast, so/ /purchase your tickets today!/ Tickets
must be purchased in advance at the Delta Museum and Archives for $29.00
