The MSA Museum Society is undertaking to transfer ownership of the
Society's collections to the new Abbotsford Cultural Centre and is
seeking advice and input on the process. Currently the Reserve and
archival collections are stored in the Museum's Annex location, a
temporary site in the lower level in the Abbotsford's main branch of the
Fraser Valley Regional Library, and archives services and small
exhibitions are offered at the Annex location. The library will be
expanding into the space occupied by the Annex in 2009 so the Museum
Society will need to relocate the collections by next May.
The Centre, whose mission is "to create an arts and heritage centre of
excellence in the heart of the community for the enrichment of all
citizens and visitors" will be opening on September 22, and offers state
of the art, environmentally controlled artifact storage space, exhibit
gallery and archival research area superior to what the Museum Society
can provide. Museum Society representatives and staff have been
involved in the design process to ensure collections spaces meet the
requirements of the Museum's collection.
Both societies hope to establish a partnership agreement that transfers
ownership and responsibility for care of the Museum's collections to the
ACC but provides for rights of access by the Museum Society . The
Museum Society will continue to operate from its primary location,
Trethewey House Heritage Site. Trethewey House will continue to house
artifacts sympathetic to the restored 1920's heritage house to interpret
community development and early family life in Abbotsford. Once an
agreement has been reached, it will be brought to a general meeting of
Museum members for approval.
If you've had experience with a similar transfer the committee tasked
with development of a transition plan would welcome your advice and
input on the many issues that need to be considered and addressed in the
partnership agreement. Please contact Kris Foulds, MSA Museum
Collections Manager: msaarchives@shaw.ca.
Thanks,
Kris
