MUSEUM COLLECTIONS MANAGER - North Vancouver Museum & Archives

The North Vancouver Museum & Archives is launching a multi-year project to =
overhaul stewardship activities for its collection of 17,500 museum artifac=
ts. NVMA seeks an experienced Collections Manager to spearhead this four-ye=
ar project (2008-2011). This position is a full-time, limited term (4 year)=
 appointment.
Reporting to the Director, the Collections Manager will work in collaborati=
on with a part-time Curator of Collections, a Collections Committee, and se=
lected volunteers. S/he will also draw on the advice of contract consultant=
s who have expertise in collections management and collection database mana=
gement. The goal of the four-year Collection Stewardship project will be to=
 bring all collection planning, practices, policies, and procedures in line=
 with accepted museological standards in order to improve public accessibil=
ity to the collection.
The project will involve a sweeping re-assessment of how collections are do=
cumented, handled, and housed, as well as a revision of collection policies=
, acquisition criteria and the undertaking of a de-accessioning initiative.=
 This is a terrific opportunity for someone to make an impact by bringing a=
 collection that has languished back to life. This important project is bei=
ng launched concurrently with a visioning process that will provide a found=
ation for the planning of North Vancouver's new community museum facility. =
The Collection Stewardship project will be essential in preparing the colle=
ction for a future move from its current warehouse location to new storage =
facilities and the construction of a new museum building.
Qualifications: * University degree in museum studies, historic preservatio=
n, or related field * Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experienc=
e * Excellent knowledge of standard collections management practices and au=
tomated collection database systems * Sound knowledge of standard artifact =
conservation and handling procedures * Ability to handle, classify, researc=
h and catalogue a variety of artifacts, art works and historic objects; and=
 photograph such items * Strong research and communication skills and a hig=
h level of attention to detail * A self-starter with the ability to work in=
dependently on complex projects, to solve problems and multi-task * Ability=
 to work effectively with staff members, Commission and Committee members, =
and contract consultants * Ability to supervise volunteers * Ability to lif=
t and move materials of reasonable weight and to climb stairs * Knowledge o=
f Microsoft Access is an asset * Province of British Columbia driver's lice=
nse * Criminal record check is required
This 4-year term, full-time position (35 hours per week) is compensated at =
Pay Grade 22 ($26.18 per hour), with a comprehensive range of benefits - in=
cluding paid vacation, pension plan, extended health and dental, and insura=
nce - after qualifying periods are met.
