New Royal BC Museum book speaks volumes about BC history

VICTORIA - The Royal BC Museum has written the book on BC history.

Celebrating the province's 150 years in 160 pages, Free Spirit:
Stories of You, Me and BC, is a collection of vignettes about the
lives and locations, the characters and cornerstones that have shaped
British Columbia. "Taken together, these stories show we are all
connected by the fantastic history we share," says Royal BC Museum
(RBCM) CEO Pauline Rafferty. "But I hope they inspire all British
Columbians to consider the richness of their own stories and how they
contribute to our shared heritage, the larger tapestry of the
province."

Written by RBCM publisher Gerald Truscott, this commemorative book is an
element of the six-part Free Spirit project, an RBCM initiative designed
to celebrate British Columbia's 150th anniversary as a Crown Colony.
Included with each book is a 100-minute DVD of BC travelogues from the
1940s - 1960s, compiled by archivist Dennis Duffy of the BC Archives.

"At first glance, the book may appear to focus on objects - after all,
most of it is based on the collections of the provincial museum and
archives," says Truscott, a lifelong BC resident, who has managed the
Royal BC Museum publishing program since 1989. "But every object has a
story about the people associated with it." The public launch of Free
Spirit, the book, will take place at the Royal BC Museum, Friday June 6,
from 6 to 7 p.m.

Everyone who buys a copy of the book ($39.95) at the event will
receive a complimentary pass to the museum. The book is available at
the Royal Museum shop. Or to order a copy, email
_shop@royalbcmuseum.bc.ca_ , phone (250) 356-0505 or visit your local
bookshop.

The Royal BC Museum, a provincial crown corporation, collects, preserves
and interprets artifacts, specimens and documents
that tell the story of British Columbia. As the provincial museum and
archives, the RBCM proudly shares that story with the world through
its research, exhibitions and public programs. For more information on
the Royal BC Museum, visit www.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca or call
