The Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia was founded in 1971 to
preserve the history of the Jews of British Columbia. In March 2007, it
opened a new, vibrant Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia.
During its first year of operation, the JMABC received excellent reviews
for its permanent and temporary exhibitions, school and public
programming, as well as archival and genealogical services. The
following position is a vital member of a professional staff team that
supports the JMABC's on-going operations and that makes the new facility
a dynamic cultural venue.

The Education Coordinator provides administrative, educational, and
training work for the Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia's
educational programs, special events, and volunteer services. The
Education Coordinator exercises considerable independent action,
judgment, and initiative, in accordance with established policies and
procedures. The Education Coordinator reports to the Executive
Director/Curator, who reviews and evaluates performance.
REPONSIBILITIES:
* Researches, develops, coordinates, implements, and conducts
educational programs and special events that increase
understanding and enjoyment of the Jewish Museum and Archives of
BC for school groups (public and private schools, Jewish day and
supplementary schools), other groups, and the general public.
* Establishes program and event priorities and objectives and
develops and coordinates programs and events.
* Prepares budgets, oversees approved budgets, prepares grant
applications, and oversees grant projects.
* Prepares and maintains records, reports, and correspondence
dealing with educational programming, special events, and volunteers.
* Prepares and writes educational programs, training materials,
teaching aids, and teachers' materials.
* Engages experts for lectures, demonstrations, and workshops.
* Recruits, interviews, screens (including criminal record checks,
as necessary), schedules, trains, coordinates, and evaluates
volunteers for the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC (excluding
members of the board), especially for the presentation and/or
implementation of school and public programs or special events.
* Prepares promotional materials for the Jewish Museum and Archives
of BC's educational programs, special events, and volunteer
recruitment drives and arranges for the distribution of these
materials.
* Supervises the scheduling of school visits and group tours.
* Establishes and maintains communication with other staff,
community groups, educational institutions, teachers, other
museums, and other contacts in both the Jewish and general
communities regarding school programs, public programs, special
events, and volunteers.
* Acquires, identifies, catalogues, and maintains a collection of
artifacts, audiovisual materials, and props used in programs.
* Develops and maintains a research and reading library for training
purposes.
* Represents the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC at conferences or
meetings dealing with educational programming and/or volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* University graduation in an area covered by the museum's mandate,
museum studies, or teacher training.
* Working knowledge of Judaism and the history of the Jews of BC.
* Considerable knowledge of contemporary educational objectives and
curricula.
* Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures
used in developing, coordinating, and implementing educational and
training programs.
* Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures
used in teaching and training adults.
* Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with other staff, volunteers, and the general public.
* Demonstrated ability to research, develop, coordinate, promote,
and evaluate school programs, special events, and volunteer
training programs, under general supervision.
* Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, supervise, motivate, and
evaluate volunteers.
* Working knowledge of museum curatorial methods and practices.
* Demonstrated ability to prepare budget estimates, oversee an
approved budget, and prepare and maintain work records,
correspondence, and related materials.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English in oral
and written form.
* Demonstrated ability to manage numerous projects at one time and
to meet deadlines.
* A criminal record check indicating clearance to work with children.
HOURS OF WORK: Full-time, 35 hours per week, including Sundays to
