Do you have an interest in the Visual Arts and developing leading edge
technology?

This is a rare opportunity to contribute to the development of open
source software for use in the creation of an innovative contemporary
art project. If you enjoy working with programming code and would like
to work with professional artists instead of business executives, this
is the job for you. Do you see yourself as an artist in addition to
being a programmer? This Internship will be fun, challenging, and
provide you with the tools and experience useful for your own portfolio
and resume upon completion of the contract.

The Surrey Art Gallery’s Digital Outreach Intern will work within a team
including three internationally recognized artists and will help expand
the possible behaviors of their proprietary software applications. This
team is working on a year-long TechLab digital art residency project,
known as GLOCAL. GLOCAL will realize an interactive and on-line artwork
that uses a relational database and social networking tools. Surrey has
been designated as a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2008 and the GLOCAL
project is one of its key initiatives. This project has also been
supported by Arts Partners in Creative Development, with the final
artwork planned for presentation in 2010.

During the internship, the candidate will add to their skills, and
particularly enhance their ability to work with art-focused multimedia
computer object-oriented programming platforms (Flash, Max/MSP,
Processing, ActionScript) tangible computing, web programming
(HTML/JAVA, WordPress), archival database management (FileMaker Pro,
Microsoft Access), as well as the maintenance and application of other
electronic hardware based devices (webcams, CPUs, mobile phones).

Candidates should have excellent organizational and interpersonal
skills, advanced computer skills, and can demonstrate the ability to
plan and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Successful applicants
will have experience working in teams and working effectively with youth
and the public.

Work hours are generally between 9 and 5pm, Monday to Friday, with
occasional evening and weekend hours.

This opportunity is grant funded to assist students who have recently
completed their post secondary education gain practical work experience
in their given discipline. Applicants must have completed a degree or
diploma from a post secondary school in the areas of visual arts,
computer science, digital media, interactive arts, communications, art
education or arts management.

Compensation: $21.65/hour
Application deadline: 5pm - March 26, 2008
