SCHOOL PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: Chinese Immigration Education Kit

An opportunity to develop an interactive resource kit on Chinese history
and immigration in British Columbia (with a focus on Richmond) that
elementary school teachers will borrow for a three-week period for use
in their classroom.=20

DELIVERABLES
The successful candidate will be responsible for:=20
* Creating a work plan and timeline for the project. The project
will begin in spring 2008 and be completed no later than end of
September 2008.=20
* Researching and developing the content and organisation of the
kit in accordance with the BC Curriculum and in consultation with a
committee of stakeholders from UBC, SFU, the Chinese Cultural Centre of
Greater Vancouver, the Richmond Museum and the Richmond School District.
* Working within a budget to source materials for kit.=20
* Developing a draft kit complete with teachers' manual, supply
list, sources for supplies and costs for presentation to
partners/supporters.
* Compiling the final version of the kit. The final version
should include a teachers' manual, student manuals, primary and
secondary resources, and supporting artefacts.=20

REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate should possess the following:
* A degree or extensive experience in museum interpretation,
education and/or a related discipline
* Considerable knowledge of museum principles and practices
* Previous work or volunteer experience developing programs or
resources for elementary school students, or other education program
development for a museum/historic site
* Knowledge of Richmond, British Columbia, and Canadian history
* Knowledge of Chinese-Canadian history and related issues in BC
* Ability to plan and organise
* Effective interpersonal skills=20
* Ability to work independently within a collaborative process
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Excellent research skills
* Design/layout skills an asset=20

PROJECT GUIDELINES
The kit will be:
* Consistent with the Richmond Museum School Programs Policy
* Developed in consultation with the School Programs Coordinator
from the Richmond Museum and the kit development committee=20
* In keeping with elements significant to Chinese-Canadian
culture
* Linked to BC Curriculum=20
* Composed of a variety of primary and secondary source material,
as well as a teacher's manual contained in an easily transportable
receptacle
* Fun! Encouraging critical thinking, interactive, hands-on
exploration and multi-disciplinary learning=20
* Easy for teachers to use in the classroom with minimal
preparation and in a variety of flexible ways
* Emphasising primary sources which teachers do not usually have
easy access=20

CONTRACT FEE: $3800 (not including cost of supplies). Payment will
be made in two instalments: one at the mid- point of the project and the
second upon successful completion of the project.
