Introduction to Aboriginal Tourism=20
This introductory workshop provides an opportunity for aboriginal and =
non-aboriginal tourism entrepreneurs, students in tourism/heritage =
related programs and interested community members to learn about the =
benefits of aboriginal tourism and within the context of tourism =
development, to explore traditional and non-traditional partnership =
opportunities. Case studies and a review of best practices will provide =
participants with a better understanding of the sensitivities and =
approaches to this growing industry that will strengthen their business =

Facilitators: Ursula Pfahler is the owner and operator of Poda =
Communications, a tourism consulting and training business. She has =
facilitated a wide variety of tourism workshops in BC communities and =
regularly presents on Heritage/Cultural Tourism issues at tourism =
conferences and in educational institutions such as the Cultural =
Resource Management Program at UVic, the Tourism Management Program at =
Capilano College and Camosun College. She has been involved in =
BC=E2=80=99s tourism industry for almost 13 years =E2=80=93 and all =
aspects of group travel including tour design, administration and =
marketing. Ursula has a passion for aboriginal tourism and has been a =
member of Aboriginal Tourism BC since 1999. Ursula is a certified =
SuperHost community trainer for Tourism Victoria and a Master Trainer =
for Tourism BC.=20
Souie Gorup was born in Halifax, NS of Mi=E2=80=99kmaq parentage. She =
began her career by living with the Inuit of Northern Quebec carrying =
out community based research by mapping and recording Inuit world views, =
Inuit scientific knowledge, and life histories. She has been living in =
Coast Salish territories for 13 years. Souie worked in the treaty =
process with the Te=E2=80=99mexw Treaty Association for 8 years =
conducting community based research, resource use mapping and recording =
oral histories. She has developed many friendships with the elders whose =
understanding, stories and perceptions she helps document. She sees the =
world through their eyes and from this experience, believes Aboriginal =
tourism is a vehicle to create a better understanding between cultures =
and empower First Nations, especially youth. Souie volunteers with =
Aboriginal Tourism BC since 2003 which is how she came to know Ursula! =
She also volunteers with the Cowichan North American Indigenous Games =
2008. She worked for Parks Canada=E2=80=99s Gulf Islands National Park =
Reserve for three years as First Nations Liaison and played a key role =
in the development of the First Nations Program that assists First =
Nations tourism initiatives, training and the delivery of a youth camp =
and other special events. Souie now works as an Aboriginal Advisor with =
the Provincial Government=E2=80=99s New Relationship helping support =
First Nations partnership initiatives.
