We worked with ArtCraft as well for 16 signs at Heritage Square a few years
ago. The signs were printed on a plastic (not sure what type exactly) then
inserted into the metal frame (similar to what Surrey used) with a lexan
face. The nice thing about the frame is that the printed sign can easily be
removed (with a special tool - so not easily removed by vandals), cleaned
and replaced - or reprinted if need be without redoing the frame.
Unfortunately, because the frame is not sealed, there is quite a bit of dirt
and algae that collects that needs to be cleaned regularly. We found that
the sign face yellowed over time, although I've been assured that the lexan
now used for the sign faces should last up to 10 years before yellowing (we
installed ours in 2002 and those most exposed to the elements have yellowed
visibly). We've also found that there is quite a bit of condensation in
some of the signs that remains even once the weather dries out.

At the City of Surrey we have designed 30+ heritage storyboard signs. We
have used a company called ArtCraft (604-552-1055, Contact Jim Sharp) in
Port Coquitlam to produce all of them, and they have always done a wonderful
job. They are printed on aluminum with lexan anti-graffiti faces and Smart
Frames, and fit into metal stands that anchor them into the ground.
Depending on where they are located, they need a quick bit of cleaning every
couple of years to remove any dirt or algae that somehow occasionally
accumulates inside the frames.

If you'd like to contact me directly, I'd be happy to give you tips on
design (dlbrown@surrey.ca).

I'm looking to install outdoor interpretive panels relating the history of
the Peace River in our area and I was wondering if those of you with
experience in this field have any tips on design and durability. Is there
a reputable Canadian company that can help me develop/produce these?

Thanks. Rosaleen
