MANAGING ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS

Many museums hold archival materials including documents and photographs th=
at require specialized care and management. This course focuses on archives=
as an important component of museum collections and develops your understa=
nding of ways in which they should be organized, managed, preserved and sha=
red. While there is common ground between the management of artifacts and t=
he management of archives, recognizing the distinctions is important to car=
ing effectively for documentary materials and increasing their role in the =
museum environment. Regardless of the kind of institution you work in, this=
course strengthens your understanding of
* the nature of archival materials
* theories, principles, and practices governing archival management
* legal, administrative, and professional frameworks
* appraisal, acquisition, and accessioning of archives
* archival arrangement and description, including the application of arc=
hival descriptive standards
* physical processing and storage
* the importance of preventive conservation
* reference services and access issues
* using archives to enhance exhibits, educational offerings, and outreac=
h initiatives
* the role of archives in culture and heritage

Instructor
Laura Millar has been an archival, editorial, and educational consultant fo=
r over 25 years. She received her Master of Archival Studies degree from th=
e University of British Columbia, Canada, in 1984 and her PhD in archival s=
tudies from the University of London, England, in 1996. She is the author o=
f nearly four dozen professional publications on a range of topics, includi=
ng records and archives management; information systems; and editing, publi=
shing, and writing. She has delivered dozens of workshops, seminars, and pr=
esentations on archives and records management around the world, from Inuvi=
k, Northwest Territories and St. John's, Newfoundland to Lusaka, Zambia and=
Wellington, New Zealand.
Laura has worked with international agencies such as the International Reco=
rds Management Trust, the United Nations, and the World Bank, and with gove=
rnments around the world, including Bermuda, Trinidad and Tobago, Sri Lanka=
, and Ghana. In British Columbia, she has consulted with local government m=
useums and archives, including Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, =
Coquitlam, and New Westminster. Her most recent consulting work has been wi=
th such diverse organizations as the Vancouver Art Gallery, the United Chur=
ch of Canada, the College of Registered Nurses' of British Columbia, the Go=
vernment of Alberta, and the Salvation Army. She has taught archival studie=
s courses at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, a=
nd the University of Alberta. Laura was the author of the 1988 publication =
A Manual for Small Archives, which remains a popular reference tool for arc=
hival management in museums, archives, and community associations across Ca=
nada. Her latest book, on the preservation of authors' and publishers' arch=
ives, will be available in September 2008.
