We are looking for a highly social and fun-loving individual, who is
interested in art, photography, communication strategies, and working
with people with diverse cultures, locally and globally. If you enjoy
using a computer, chatting on Facebook and would like to share your
enthusiasm for art and technology with youth of all ages, this position
is for you!
You will work within a team that includes three internationally
recognized artists and assist them developing and testing strategies to
engage local and global participation in their work. This team is
involved in a year-long TechLab digital art residency project, called
GLOCAL. GLOCAL is building an interactive and on-line artwork that uses
a relational database and social networking tools. Surrey has been
designated as a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2008 and the GLOCAL
project is one of its key initiatives. This project has also been
supported by Arts Partners in Creative Development, with the final
artwork planned for presentation in 2010.
During the internship, the candidate will enhance their skills working
with youth and the public. They will assist with the development of
training materials for teachers on subjects such as social networking
applications (i.e. Facebook), and collaborative learning. They will also
gain practical knowledge about Creative Commons, digital art practices,
and enhance their skills working with computers including video
conferencing and online marketing.
Candidates should have excellent organizational, interpersonal and
computer skills. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to
plan and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Successful applicants
must have experience working in teams and working effectively with youth
and the public. Fluency in other languages is an asset.
Work hours are generally between 9 and 5pm, Monday to Friday, with
occasional evening and weekend hours.
This opportunity is grant funded to assist students who are returning to
post secondary education in the fall. Preferred applicants are studying
visual arts, photography, computer science, digital media, interactive
arts, communications, art education or arts management. _ Under the
Young Canada Works Program, a_Applicants must be under 30 years of age
at the start of employment. You must be Canadian citizen or permanent
resident eligible to work in Canada, and have a valid BC driver's
license with a safe driving history. * The salary will be $17.76 per
