/Vancouver//, BC (September 4, 2008)/ - The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical
Chinese Garden will host a Mid-Autumn Moon Festival to celebrate the
second biggest event in the Chinese calendar. We would like to invite
every sector of our multicultural community to join us for a variety of
family-oriented activities and Chinese style celebrations on *_Sunday,
September 14, from 10:00am until 4:30 pm (admission by donation)._*
The 1000-year-old tradition of Mid-Autumn Moon Festival celebrates the
moon as a deity of utmost reverence. In Chinese culture, the roundness
of the full moon symbolizes togetherness, harmony, and family unity. On
the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar when the
moon appears the largest and brightest, Chinese families around the
world gather to celebrate the end of a harvest season known; this is
known as the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. This ancient tradition allows
time for the family to unite in a perfect circle like the moon:
unbreakable, never-ending, and harmonious. In other parts of Asia such
as India and Korea, a similar harvest festival time is also celebrated.
The Garden's celebration will include Moon Cake sampling (traditional
round pastry served for this festival filled with red bean, lotus paste,
egg yolks, or nuts) generously donated by Keefer Bakery. Cultural
performances feature traditional Chinese flute by Larry Yan and Su Lin.
There will also be Yin/Yang Yoga demonstrations, dramatic storytelling
by Naomi Steinberg, a large Childrens' Hall for colouring, origami,
balloon twisting and a visit from the legendary Jade Rabbit himself!
