Why is There Greater Biodiversity in the Tropics?
-Insect Diversity in the Eocene Epoch. Bruce Archibald, Ph.D.

Thursday, October 2, 2008
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
at the Okanagan Heritage Museum
470 Queensway Ave (corner of Ellis and Queensway)
The Kelowna Museums' Collections and Conservation Department proudly
presents "Why
is There Greater Biodiversity in the Tropics?" with Bruce Archibald, Ph.D.
During this public talk, Archibald will present his theory to the question of
why
we find greater diversity, that is, many more species of plants and animals,
in
the tropics than in more temperate climates. This question was first posed
by an
18th century explorer on his journey through the Amazon jungle, a question
which
biologists are still working to resolve.
Archibald's talk will focus on the Eocene epoch in British Columbia, some 51
million
years ago, and will compare insect specie diversity during this time period,
between
those of Costa Rica and the temperate forests of Massachusetts.
Fossil artefacts will be on display from the Special Collections of the
Kelowna
Museums, such as a rare specimen insect fossil of Microberotha
maccullough. There
will also be other examples of fossilized specimens from different time
periods.
Collections and Conservation staff will be on-hand with a specimen
microscope,
allowing you to get a close-up view of these specimens.
Bruce Archibald completed his Ph.D.. through the Department of Organismic
and Evolutionary
Biology at Harvard University and is currently a Post-Doctorate Fellow at
Simon
Fraser University.
Please RSVP by September 30 to (250) 763-2417
Admission is by donation.
