*White Flesh Cherry at the 14^th Annual Cherry Fair*

*- Saturday, July 25^th , 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. *

Cherry growers in the Okanagan are scientists, of a sort. They grow and
test new cherry varieties which often results in new selections being
available on the market. On Saturday, July 25^th , you can reap the
rewards of the growers’ hard work and taste Stardust, a white flesh
cherry, at the 14^th Annual Cherry Fair from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Presented by the BC Orchard Industry Museum.

“The Stardust cherry is a variety developed and tested by the Summerland
Research Station. Its skin is half pink and half cream coloured with a
creamy white interior flesh,” notes Brante Farrell of Westbank Harvest,
an orchard in West Kelowna. “Stardust is sweet and mild and is a cross
between the Stella cherry and a developmental variety from the Research
Station.”

Starburst matures late in the cherry season which begins generally in
late June in the south Okanagan where temperatures are warmer and lasts
until late August in the cooler north Okanagan.

In addition to the Stardust cherry, this Saturday you’ll also be able to
taste Lambert, Lapin, Vans, Sylvia, Skeena, Staccato, Bing, Stella,
Marble, plus more. Several of these varieties will also be available for
sale at $5 a bag.

Westbank Harvest will be just one of several growers on hand at the
Cherry Fair. Also in attendance will be the BC Fruit Growers Association
as part of the Children’s Zone, offering a Kids Only cherry tasting
booth. Okanagan Tree Fruit Cooperative will be providing cherries
sourced from packinghouses up and down the valley.

Choices Markets will also be in attendance, offering cherry recipes. And
to beat the heat, cherry ice cream from Marble Slab Creamy is a must!

Families and children of all ages will enjoy the free crafts and games
including face painting, potato sack racing, and a tug-of-war.

The Cherry Fair will be located outdoors on the lawn next to the Library
Parkade at 1380 Ellis Street in Kelowna. Admission is by donation.

Support the BC Orchard Industry Museum and celebrate the harvest of the
cherry!
