_New Exhibit Opens: __‘Bark, Roots, Grasses: Basketry Traditions of the
Central Coast’_

Baskets have been called the oldest form of human manufacture and
various styles and uses of baskets, as well as eating mats, seating
mats, hats, ceremonial regalia, and tourist trade items– are currently
on display in the Museum at Campbell River. "A basket woven specifically
to hold '78 records is a very specific and intriquing use" says Lesia
Davis, Executive Director.

Baskets recovered from sites in the area have been dated to 4400 years
ago, although styles have changed a good deal. Materials that were used
varied with the area and include cedar root, split cedar, cherry bark,
grasses, and spruce root.

The exhibit will be on until the end of October, and various workshops
and school programs will be offered.
