Teachers will have an easier time bringing students on a guided tour of
the BC Museum of Mining. The museum has received an $8,500 increase in
funding for travel subsidies issued to schools over last year. This
addition of funds means over $12,000 is available to subsidize school
field trips to visit the BC Museum of Mining and the new EPCOR Britannia
Mine Water Treatment Plant Discovery Centre.

The initiative is part of the BCMM’s strategy to overcome the effects of
the economic downturn and rising transportation costs. The BCMM, located
15 minutes south of Squamish, is farther than most field trip
destinations in the Lower Mainland. The increase in funding will enable
approximately 1,900 students to benefit from the Museum’s travel
subsidies, compared to 700 last year.

BCMM offers guided tours tailored to meet the needs of BC Teachers.
Geology, History, Social Studies and Environmental Science are presented
through underground tunnel tours, historic buildings and the Water
Treatment Plant’s interactive Discovery Centre.

Donors include: EPCOR (who operate the Britannia Mine Water Treatment
Facility) awarded $4,000; TD Bank’s Friends of the Environment
Foundation awarded $3,500; and an industry donor has pledged $1,000.
Each year the Greater Vancouver Women’s Mining Association (GVWMA)
donates around $3,500, which was previously issued to schools in $150
Travel Subsidies for field trips to the Museum. BCMM plans to increase
the subsidies to $200 per field trip, and new subsidies for tours of the
Britannia Water Treatment Plant have been created.

Teachers interested in booking a field trip and applying for a Travel
Subsidy may visit www.bcmm.ca or call 1-800-896-4044 ext 226.
