For Immediate Release: Rebels and Realists: 100 Years of the Victoria 
Sketch Club.

The Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery is pleased to present “Rebels and  
Realists: 100 Years of the Victoria Sketch Club” which will run March  
9th to May 29th, 2009 at the University Centre Gallery.  The  
exhibition features over 50 of the club’s best-known artists including  
Josephine Crease, Sophie Pemberton, W.P Weston, Thomas Fripp, Emily  
Carr, Max Maynard, Jack Shadbolt, Ina Uhthoff. Katharine Maltwood,  
Stella Langdale and Edythe Hembroff.

Also planned is a symposium on Sunday May 3rd from 2:00 to 3:30 pm at  
the Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery.  Guest speakers include John  
Lover (author of The Victoria Sketch Club: A Centennial Celebration)  
Robert Amos (artist and Times-Colonist art critic speaking on Thomas  
Bamford, Jan Ross (Curator, Carr House) speaking on the travels and  
collecting activities of Richard Carr and the Maltwoods, Kerry Mason  
(professor, History in Art) speaking on Emily Carr and her  
contemporaries and graduate student Marnie Mandel speaking on  
Katharine Maltwood and her circle.
The book The Victoria Sketch Club: A Centennial Celebration by John  
Lover will be on sale through the Maltwood Art Museum and at the Art  
Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Royal BC Museum, Ivy’s Bookshop and  
The Land Conservancy bookshop at Abkhazi Garden.

Gallery hours are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday with special  
openings in conjunction with Auditorium events.  Please call
